when you live in the middle of nowhere you really have no other choice. but i'm not just sautéing chicken and throwing pre-made cookie dough on a cookie sheet. i have never made so many new and interesting and sometimes very difficult things. pretty much anything i bake is from scratch, because it's just easier when it comes down to it. i keep the basics (flour, sugar, baking powder....) around, so why not make it myself?
for the fourth of july i did something totally new that pretty much destroyed my kitchen: strawberry shortcake.

but it turned out pretty dang great!! of course, by the time i made it to the party i was going to everyone was tipsy and not quite wanting something sweet yet....but they got there. success!
and just tonight i made myself some jucy lucys! cooking for one can be kind of annoying, but i'm finding out what works and what doesn't. burgers? they work.

and i enjoyed it with my new favorite drink a moscow mule.
i make it with:
2 ounces vodka
4 ounces ginger beer (better than ginger ale, but either works)
a splash of bitters
the juice of half a lime
all over ice, of course

I had a mule thing in CO this summer, and it was like that! I have been desperate to find out what was in it, I will have to try this! Thank you for being my bartender, love you and miss you!!
